Dubai: Bad news for UAE expats,  the free internet calling app Skype has been blocked as users across the country reported facing disruptions to the service over the weekend.

The UAE’s telecom providers Etisalat said in replying a tweet to customers queries:

Another telecom provider, du also responded to its customers’ queries on social media in a same manner, and said:

Please note that any unauthorized applications or services that are providing VoIP calling services are not supported in UAE.”

However, as an alternative to Skype both du & Etisalat have offered the VoIP-based apps Botim and C’Me as part of their “unlimited” voice and video call services.
